This Jacob Cribbs was 5' 7.75" tall, had light complexion
and hair and his eyes were gray according to military records.
He was a private in Co. A, 135 Reg., PA Volunteer
Infantry from 8/7/1862 when enlisted at Indiana, Pa., for 9 mos. until
his mustering out at Camp Curtin, near Harrisburg, Pa., on May 24, 1863.
He was stationed near Washington D.C., for the entire time. He claimed
that sleeping in the rain and general exposure to the weather during this
time caused him to become dropsical and crippled by rheumatism in 1881
and by 1884 he was unable to work. He did have jaundice while in
the service, according to records. He applied for a disability pension
in 1888 and at the time of his death, Jacob was receiving $12 a month from
such a pension, which began around 1891.
Jacob lived in Black Township and then Dixonville,
PA. His primary occupation was as a blacksmith and later as a farmer.
I do not have a Jacob in my records that could be this one. In fact,
I have no records of anybody living in Dixonville or Black Township.
The military records I received do not include any
specific date of birth or death, but the pension was discontinued on 4/4/03
due to death of pensioner.
