Brief Biography of  David Cribbs 1827-1862
(From a faded photocopy made from an unknown book)

DAVID CRIBBS was born Apr. 16, 1827 near Livermore, Ind. Co. [Pa.].  His
father was John Cribbs, farmer and blacksmith.  His father sold the Ind. farm about
1828 (Ind. Co. Deed B, 6, p. 542) and went to Armstrong Co.
His mother died when David was about 13 years old and he, with his brothers
were early forced to make their way in life.  At the age of 22 David married Sarah Say,
born Aug. 6, 1829 at Nickleville, Venango Co.   David lived for a time in a stone
house on his wife's father's farm.  Then he purchased a 50 a. farm nearby in Clarion Co.
He had the following children:   I. James Hannah.  II. Sarah Anna.   III. William Luther.
IV.  Elsie Jane.   V. Edwin.   VI.  Leslie.  VII. Olive Oatman.  VIII. John Chas. Fremont.
When the war of the Rebellion broke out, David enlisted and in a little more than one
year later, he was mortally wounded in a bloody battle of Fredericksburg, and he died a
few days later in a prison in Richmond, Va.  He left a widow with a baby in her arms
and the oldest of seven children about twelve years old.   The wife found a home for
Olive, 2 years old, and Leslie with George H. Cribbs, a double cousin of the father's,
who lived on the farm, Fairview, a short distance from Homer City, Ind. Co.   The other
two girls were put in the poor farm, and with the help of the oldest boy the widow tried
to make a living for the rest of the family.
