A BRIEF BIOGRAPHY OF COVINGTON BRANNICK CRIBBS
(Written by Robert Shaw, Jr. in the History of Bryan County, Georgia)

Covington Brannick Cribbs, son of John and Jane Cribbs, was born February 1, 1791 in Orangeburg, South Carolina.  Corporal Covington was in the War of 1812 from South Carolina.

He married Sarah S. Cannon (August 3, 1799-June 2, 1868) January 13, 1816 in Chatham County, Georgia.  She was the daughter of Archibald Cannon and Mary Jordan.  Thirteen children were born to this marriage.  My great-great grandfather, their second son (Archibald), married Cloie Ann Futch April 3, 1841, in Bulloch County.

In 1820 Covington and Sarah were in Bulloch County.  In 1840 they were in Bryan County.  Covington was connected with the early school system in both counties.  Covington performed marriages in Bryan County in the 1840's.

Covington died in Bryan County October 16, 1844, and I believe he is buried at Wise Cemetery near Clyde in Fort Stewart.

After Covington's death Sarah lost her homestead and moved the younger children to Sumter County, Georgia, in 1857.  Later they moved to Hamilton County, Florida.

They left behind three sons, Thomas, Archibald, and Reddick, who raised families in Bryan County.

Covington  had five sons and several grandsons who fought during the Civil War for Georgia and Florida.

Covington's son, Jordan, received part of his education in Bryan County before Sarah moved.  He was a Primitive Baptist minister in Hamilton County, Florida.  By his writings and records we know about the early Cribbs family.  Sarah died in Hamilton County, Florida.

    I know hundreds of Covington's 2500 descendants.
