Cullen Cribbs's second wife was Caroline Martin. When they married, her father gave her some Negro slaves. To this marriage were born five girls: Emily, Josephine, Victoria, Elizabeth, and Helen.
William Thomas Calton Cribbs, (born August 27, 1820, died October 11, 1885) married Susan Capas Stone, (born October 11, 1820, died July 31 1885) on October 12, 1843. To this union were born Porter James, Sarah Frances Emily (born September 12, 1847), Rufus Monroe, Mary M., William M., Nevada Elizabeth (born January 9, 1852) and Gordon Franklin.
Daniel Cribbs married Jane Stone, sister
of Susan Stone. Their children were Teresa,
Teena,
Samantha,
Cullen, and Eliza.
Cullen married
Sis Johnson.
Katherine Cribbs married Alton Bryant.
Clerindy Cribbs married Jim Elgin.
James Cribbs married Martha Martin and their son was Billy Cribbs. James was in the cavalry, volunteering when he was 18, and his commanding officer was John Carroll.
John Cribbs married Teen Powell.
During the Civil War William Thomas Calton Cribbs came home twice and his wife, Susan Capas Stone, was away visiting neighbors both times. He would leave his Regiment, which was in the neighborhood, run home, stay a little while and then run back. Once when he came home his daughters Sarah Frances and Nevada Elizabeth filled his canteen with fresh buttermilk for him to drink. One time Sarah Frances and Nevada Elizabeth were spinning and weaving and a rooster kept hopping upon the porch to crow. They thought his crowing sounded like "Uncle John's coming home." Later they learned that Uncle John did come home from the Civil War that day.
William Thomas Calton Cribbs and Susan Capas Stone moved from Trevant or Dyersburg, Tenneessee, to Marmaduke, Arkansas when Nevada Elizabeth was grown. Nevada Elizabeth Cribbs married James Franklin Ledbetter September 11, 1873, in Marmaduke, Arkansas. To this marriage were born: William Porter (March 15, 1875), Cleora, Altie Argen, Ada Frances, Lela Alice, Verda, Thomas Pressley and Mary Kneller.
Mary Ruth Snoddy, a Ledbetter cousin, gave the foregoing to me:.
Sarah Frances Emily married James Thomas Kirby (born April 13, 1852 died August l2, 1915). They had 2 children that I know of: Nora Kirby (born July 10, 1884 died January 6, 1961) and Abner Kirby, dates unknown at present.
Nora Kirby married Willie Lee Allen (born April 11, 1880 died April 3, 1951). To them were born Chester Lawrence Allen, Sr. (April 5, 1904-March 11 1985), Kenneth (R K) Allen, Rudene Allen, Ruth "Bobbie" Allen and Glenn Truett Allen. Glenn Truett died before he was a year old.
Chester Lawrence Allen, Sr. married Gladys Elizabeth Camp (June 14, 1906-November 25, 1988) on October 19, 1924, at Dothan, Texas. Marriage was performed by Rev. Bob Yeager.
To this union were born: Chester Lawrence Allen, Jr. ("Chet"-"C. L.") on May 10, 1926 near Dothan, Texas, Dale Denton Allen (December 28, 1928), Shirley Belle Allen (May 5, 1931-May 12, 1931) and Fred Harvey Allen (May l3, 1933) Dale was born on the Turner place and Shirley and Fred on the McClenny in Stephens County, Texas.
My grandmother, Nora Kirby Allen always swore that whenever a rooster hopped upon the back step (had no back porch) and crowed it meant that company was coming, although I don't recall anyone ever showing up. Nevada Cribbs Ledbetter was always referred to by my elders as "Aunt Vadie Ledbetter" and the Ledbetters always referred to Sarah Cribbs Kirby as "Aunt Sack". Verda Ledbetter married a Sprawls, and Dad always called her Cousin Verda. While attending Cisco Jr. College in Cisco, TX, 1946-1948, I roomed with "Cousin Tom" Ledbetter and his wife.
