"On December 10, 1849 John M. Kirk became postmaster and
on that date the name of the post office was changed from
Crossville to Military Springs.  The reason, if any, for the
change, the records do not show.  Mr. Kirk served until
February 24, 1851 and was succeeded by Peter CRIBBS, who
served from that date until June 29, 1854.  Postmaster
CRIBBS' salary for the year 1851 appears to have been in two

"On June 29, 1854 Peter CRIBBS was succeeded as
postmaster by Martha A. CRIBBS, whether related to him or not
the record does not show.  She served until February 5, 1856.
Her salary for the year was $20.31."
